ABOUT RYAN
Ryan Smith is a Maui-based artist known for creating intricate mosaic portraits composed from thousands of carefully hand-cut fragments. Drawing inspiration from sports history, iconic figures, and cultural storytelling, each artwork is meticulously assembled using vintage sports cards, newspapers, magazines, photographs, and archival materials.

What first appears as a traditional portrait transforms upon closer inspection into a layered narrative of texture, history, and symbolism. Every fragment is intentionally placed, allowing viewers to discover hidden details, stories, and emotional connections within the work itself.

Ryan’s art exists at the intersection of fine art, nostalgia, and craftsmanship. His mosaics celebrate legendary athletes, historical icons, and personal memories while preserving the physical materials that shaped those stories. Through patience, precision, and thousands of individual cuts, he creates pieces that feel both timeless and deeply personal.

His work has been recognized by major media outlets including ESPN, CNN/Yahoo, MSN, the New York Post, and the LA Times, and has been commissioned by professional athletes, sports organizations, collectors, and museums across the country.
From a distance, each piece reads like a painting. Up close, thousands of fragments reveal the story.
